Union and Professional Dues
Which union and professional dues are deductible and where to find the amount.
The short version
- Annual union dues, and annual dues to keep a professional status recognized by law, are deductible on line 21200.
- Union dues taken off your pay are in box 44 of your T4. Dues you paid yourself need a receipt.
- Also deductible: professional liability insurance you had to carry, and dues to a parity or advisory committee required under provincial law.
- Not deductible: initiation fees, licences, special assessments, and the parts of dues that go to pension, life insurance or other benefits.
- It's a deduction, so it saves tax at your marginal rate: often 25% to 45% of what you paid.
Union and Professional Dues Tax Deduction
This is the easiest deduction on the return and still one of the most missed. The union takes dues off every pay, the employer puts them in box 44 of the T4, and then somebody types box 14 into the software and forgets box 44. That's a few hundred dollars left on the table every year, and the fix is one line.
What You Can Deduct
| Usually deductible | Usually not deductible |
|---|---|
| Annual dues to a trade union or public servants' association | Initiation or entrance fees |
| Annual dues to maintain a professional status recognized by statute (nurses, engineers, accountants, electricians' licensing bodies and similar) | Licence fees to run a business |
| Professional or malpractice liability insurance required to keep your status | Special assessments and charges for pension, insurance or benefit plans |
| Dues to a parity or advisory committee required by provincial law | Dues to social or recreational clubs |
The test for professional dues: you need the status to practise, and it's recognized by law. Voluntary memberships (a trade association you join for networking) usually don't qualify. Self-employed? Those dues go on form T2125 as a business expense instead; see self-employed taxes.
Where to Find the Amount
- T4 box 44 for dues deducted from your pay. See T4 slip explained.
- A receipt or statement from the union or professional body for dues you paid directly.
- Your pay stubs, if box 44 is blank but dues came off.
If the receipt includes GST/HST, you may be able to claim it back with form GST370, the employee and partner GST/HST rebate, if your employer is registered.
Are your dues deductible?
Tell the assistant which union or professional body you pay and what the fee covers. It tells you whether it qualifies, which line it goes on, and what it saves you.
What It's Worth
A deduction comes off income, so it saves your marginal tax rate. $1,200 of dues saves about $240 at a 20% rate, about $370 at 31%, and over $500 at 43%. It also lowers net income, which can slightly raise income-tested benefits like the Canada Child Benefit.
Forgot Them in Past Years?
Go back with Change my return. It's a quick fix: line 21200, the amount from box 44, done. Ten years of $900 dues at 30% is $2,700 sitting in old returns.
Three Rules of Thumb
- Check box 44 every year before you file.
- Keep receipts for any dues you paid directly; see what receipts to keep.
- Don't claim the benefit portion of dues that fund insurance or pensions.
Return Check compares your T4 boxes with your return and flags dues that never made it onto line 21200. Other employee deductions are on employment expense tax deductions.
