Ask a Canadian Tax Question

Ask a Canadian tax question and get a clear answer with CRA sources, calculations and practical next steps.

General information, not tax advice. Do not type your SIN or account numbers.

What you get when you ask

  • A straight answer in the first two sentences, then the why.
  • The CRA or Government of Canada page the answer relies on.
  • A live calculator under the answer whenever there is a number to work out.
  • Free, no account, and no social insurance number needed. Ever.

Ask a Canadian Tax Question the Way You'd Ask a Friend

You don't need to know the line number or the name of the form. Type what happened. “I sold my cottage, do I owe tax?” works fine. So does “CRA sent me a letter and I don't understand it.” The assistant figures out which rules apply and asks you one short question if it really needs to.

We built it because most Canadian tax help comes in two flavours: a 90-page CRA guide, or a friend of a friend who “did his own taxes once.” Neither is great at 11 p.m. the night before a deadline.

How the Answers Stay Honest

The AI explains. It does not invent numbers. Every rate, bracket and deadline it uses comes from our rules file, and each one points to the CRA page it came from (you can see the whole list on our sources page). When the answer needs math, it hands the job to one of our Canadian tax calculators, and you see the calculation line by line.

If something is uncertain, it says so. If your situation needs a professional, it says that too, plainly. A tax assistant that is never unsure is the one to worry about.

Good Questions to Start With

What It Won't Do

It won't file your return, talk to CRA for you, or tell you how to hide income. It doesn't cover Quebec's provincial return in detail. And it isn't your accountant: it gives general information, not advice for your specific file. For a big reassessment, an audit or a collections letter, use it to understand the situation, then get a professional on your side.

Your Privacy

Don't type your SIN, account numbers or passwords; the assistant never needs them and strips out anything that looks like one. Questions are kept without names, so we can find mistakes and improve answers. The details are in our privacy policy.

Holding a CRA letter right now?

Don't retype it. Upload the PDF or a photo to the Tax Document Analyzer and it pulls out the dates, the amounts and what CRA actually wants, then you can ask follow-up questions here.

Questions About the Assistant

Is the AI tax assistant free?

Yes. Asking questions is free, with a fair-use limit per hour so the service stays fast for everyone.

Where do the answers come from?

From CRA and Government of Canada sources, and from our tested calculators for anything numeric. The assistant can also search canada.ca for rules that are not in our rules file, and it names the page it used.

Can it be wrong?

Yes, any tool can. That is why every answer shows its source and the calculator shows its math, so you can check. If you spot a mistake, tell us through the contact page and we fix the rules file.

Does it remember my conversation?

Only in your own browser tab, for the current visit. Close the tab and it is gone.
