GST/HST Calculator

Add GST/HST to a price or take it out of a total, for any province, with the federal and provincial parts.

The short version

  • Pick the province where the sale is made, enter a price, and choose whether to add GST/HST or take it out of a tax-included total.
  • The calculator shows the GST or HST, the federal and provincial parts of HST, the tax fraction, and the price before and after tax.
  • Rates for 2026: 5% GST in Alberta, the territories, BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; 13% HST in Ontario; 14% in Nova Scotia; 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI.
  • Tick the box to include provincial sales tax in BC (7%), Saskatchewan (6%) or Manitoba (7%). Quebec isn't covered.
  • It assumes a taxable sale at the general rate; zero-rated and exempt items have no GST/HST.

GST/HST Calculator Canada

Most GST/HST questions are arithmetic dressed up as tax: what's 13% of this, or how much of this receipt was tax? The calculator above does both, for every province, and shows its work. Below is the math it uses, so you can check it on the back of an envelope too.

Adding Tax to a Price

Multiply the price before tax by the rate. In Ontario, $100 x 13% = $13 of HST, for a total of $113. Of that $13, $5 is the federal part and $8 the provincial part. Quick reference:

Price before tax5% GST13% HST14% HST15% HST
$100$5.00$13.00$14.00$15.00
$1,000$50.00$130.00$140.00$150.00
$10,000$500.00$1,300.00$1,400.00$1,500.00

Taking Tax Out of a Total (Reverse Calculation)

Don't subtract 13% from the total; that takes out too much. Divide by 1 plus the rate, or use the tax fraction:

RatePrice before taxTax in the total (tax fraction)Example: $1,000 including tax
5% GSTTotal / 1.05Total x 5/105$952.38 + $47.62 GST
13% HSTTotal / 1.13Total x 13/113$884.96 + $115.04 HST
14% HSTTotal / 1.14Total x 14/114$877.19 + $122.81 HST
15% HSTTotal / 1.15Total x 15/115$869.57 + $130.43 HST

Tax fractions are also how GST/HST is calculated on forfeited deposits and bad debts.

Which Rate to Use

The rate depends on where the sale is made, not where the seller is: for goods, where they're delivered; for most services, the province of the customer's address; for work on a building, where the building is. The full rules are on how to charge GST/HST, and every rate, with history, on GST/HST rates by province.

What the Calculator Doesn't Do

  • Zero-rated and exempt items: basic groceries, prescription drugs and exports are 0%; residential rent and most health care are exempt. See taxable, zero-rated or exempt.
  • Ontario point-of-sale rebates: some items (children's clothing, diapers, books) have the provincial 8% removed.
  • Quebec QST: not covered.
  • Housing rebates: new homes have rebates that change the effective tax; see the new housing rebate.
  • Your return: what you owe CRA is collected tax minus input tax credits; see net tax calculation.

GST/HST Calculator Questions

How do I calculate HST in Ontario?

Multiply the price before tax by 13%. For example, $200 x 13% = $26 of HST, for a total of $226.

How do I take HST out of a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. In Ontario, divide by 1.13; the tax is the total multiplied by 13/113.

What is the GST rate in Canada?

5%. In HST provinces it is part of a combined rate: 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.

Do I charge my province’s rate or my customer’s?

Generally the rate of the province where the sale is made: where goods are delivered, or for most services, where the customer’s address is.

Does the calculator include PST?

Only if you tick the box, for British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Provincial sales tax is administered by those provinces and does not apply to everything.
