CRA Penalties and Interest

Every common CRA penalty with the numbers, interest rates for October to December 2026, a worked example and how to reduce them.

The short version

  • CRA charges interest on overdue tax at its prescribed rate, compounded daily: 7% a year for October to December 2026. The rate is reset every quarter, and interest also runs on penalties.
  • Filing late with a balance owing costs 5% of the balance plus 1% for each full month late, up to 12 months. Repeat late filers can pay 10% plus 2% a month, up to 20 months.
  • Not reporting income twice within four years can cost up to 10% of the unreported amount; knowingly or carelessly making a false statement costs 50% of the tax involved (at least $100).
  • CRA pays you interest on refunds too: 5% for October to December 2026 for individuals, but only starting 30 days after the later of the balance-due day and the day you filed.
  • Penalties and interest can sometimes be cancelled through taxpayer relief, or avoided through a voluntary disclosure before CRA finds the problem.

CRA Penalties and Interest Explained

CRA's penalties have a logic to them: small and automatic for being late, large and deliberate for being careless or dishonest. Interest sits underneath everything, quietly compounding every day, including on the penalties. Most people pay far more in avoidable penalties than in interest, and the single cheapest habit in Canadian tax is filing on time even when you can't pay. Here's the list, with the numbers.

Interest Rates, October to December 2026

InterestRateFrom when
Overdue tax, penalties, CPP and EI owing7%The day after the due date (April 30 for most individuals), compounded daily
Refunds to individuals5%30 days after the later of the balance-due day and the day you filed
Refunds to corporations3%Later, and at a lower rate
Instalments not paid on time7%Each instalment's due date

Interest on $10,000 owed for a year at 7%, compounded daily, is about $725. CRA interest isn't tax-deductible, so it's a real 7%. More on paying late is on late payment interest.

Interest on the $5,000 from May 1 to August 31 at 7%about $120
Total extra costabout $570, still growing until paid
Filed on time, paid in Augustabout $120 of interest only

Filing on time would have saved $450, even with no money to pay.

Getting Penalties and Interest Reduced

  • Taxpayer relief: for serious illness, a death in the family, a disaster, CRA errors or financial hardship; see taxpayer relief.
  • Voluntary disclosure: before CRA contacts you, coming forward can wipe out penalties and cut interest by up to 75%; see Voluntary Disclosures Program.
  • Objection: if a penalty was applied wrongly (for example gross negligence where you made an honest mistake), object to it like any other assessment; see CRA objection.
  • Pay sooner: every dollar paid stops interest on itself; see payment arrangements.

Rules That Avoid Most Penalties

  1. File on time every year, even with no money.
  2. Report every slip; CRA already has them. Check missing slips before filing.
  3. Pay instalments if CRA asks for them.
  4. Fix mistakes yourself before CRA finds them.
