RRIF Minimum Withdrawal Calculator
Calculate your RRIF minimum for 2026 from the January 1 value and age, the tax withheld on extra, and a ten-year projection.
The short version
- Enter the RRIF's value on January 1 and your age on that date. You get this year's minimum, the monthly equivalent, and a ten-year projection.
- Planning to take more than the minimum? Enter it to see the tax withheld on the extra (10%, 20% or 30%).
- Example: $400,000 at 72 gives a minimum of $21,600 (5.40%), $1,800 a month.
- Uses the prescribed factors from CRA's RRIF circular, unchanged since 2015. Tick "opened this year" and the minimum is zero.
- Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
RRIF Minimum Withdrawal Calculator
The RRIF minimum is one multiplication, but it's a multiplication with a lookup table, a spouse option and a first-year exception, which is three more things than most people want to deal with in January. The calculator does all of it, and then shows where the balance and the minimums are heading if you take only what you must. Spoiler: the minimum usually keeps rising for years, even as the balance falls.
What to Enter
| Box | What it means |
|---|---|
| RRIF value on January 1 | The market value on your year-end or January statement |
| Age on January 1 | Your age at the start of the year, or your spouse's if you chose to use it when you set up the RRIF |
| Growth | Only for the projection. 5% is a middle-of-the-road guess for a balanced portfolio, not a promise |
| Planned withdrawal | Optional. Shows the tax withheld on the part over the minimum |
The rules behind the numbers are on RRIF withdrawal rules, and setting a RRIF up on converting an RRSP to a RRIF.
Should you take more than the minimum?
Tell the assistant your RRIF, other income, spouse's income and province. It checks whether extra withdrawals now save tax later, with the OAS clawback and splitting included.
Reading the Projection
- Minimums keep climbing. The factor rises every year. At 5% growth, $400,000 at 72 produces a minimum that rises from $21,600 to about $30,000 by 94; with lower returns the peak comes earlier and lower.
- Withholding isn't tax. The minimum has nothing withheld, but it's fully taxable. The real tax on it, with CPP, OAS and pensions, is in the retirement income tax calculator.
- Big minimums and OAS. If the projected minimums plus other income go over the threshold, see the OAS clawback calculator.
- Splitting. From 65 up to half can go on your spouse's return; see pension income splitting.

How do I calculate my RRIF minimum withdrawal?
Multiply the RRIF value on January 1 by the factor for your age on that date. Under 71 the factor is 1 divided by (90 minus your age); from 71 it comes from a prescribed table, from 5.28% at 71 to 20% at 95 and over.
What is the RRIF minimum at age 72?
5.40% of the January 1 value. On $400,000 that is $21,600 for the year.
Is the RRIF minimum based on age at the start of the year?
Yes. The factor uses your age (or your spouse’s, if elected) at the beginning of the year.
Do I have to take a minimum in the year I open the RRIF?
No. The first minimum is required in the year after the RRIF is set up.
How much tax is withheld if I take more than the minimum?
Outside Quebec, 10% on an excess up to $5,000, 20% on $5,000.01 to $15,000, and 30% above $15,000. The minimum itself has no withholding.
