Canadian Tax Forms & Filing Tools

Find Canadian tax forms, understand what each form does and get help preparing the information you need.

The short version

  • CRA has thousands of forms. Most Canadians only ever touch a dozen of them.
  • Below are the ones people and small businesses actually use, what each is for, and when you need it.
  • Four of them we can fill in for you: T400A, T2091(IND), GST74, and the numbers for T776 and Schedule 3.
  • Always download a form from canada.ca. Old versions get rejected, and CRA updates them every year.

Canadian Tax Forms, Sorted by What You're Trying to Do

Nobody wakes up wanting “Form T2091(IND).” They wake up having sold a cottage. So we sorted the forms by the job, not the number. Each form name below is CRA's official title, checked on canada.ca, and links to CRA's own page for it.

Filing Your Personal Return

FormWhat it's for
T1 packageThe income tax and benefit return itself. Most people file it through certified tax software (NETFILE) instead of on paper.
Schedule 3Capital Gains or Losses. Anything you sold for a gain or loss: shares, crypto, land, a rental, and since 2016 your home too. See our capital gains tax calculator.
T2091(IND)Designation of a Property as a Principal Residence by an Individual. Filed when you sell a home or cottage you want to shelter from tax. Our principal residence exemption guide explains it.
T2125Statement of Business or Professional Activities. Self-employment income and expenses. Pair it with the self-employed tax calculator.
T776Statement of Real Estate Rentals. Rent, expenses and capital cost allowance. When you sell, recapture goes on line 9947 (see selling a rental property).
T777 and T2200Statement of Employment Expenses, and the Declaration of Conditions of Employment your employer signs. Employees can only deduct work expenses with the employer's T2200.
T1-MMoving Expenses Deduction, for a move that brings you closer to a new job or school.
T1032Joint Election to Split Pension Income between spouses or common-law partners.
T1135Foreign Income Verification Statement, when the total cost of your specified foreign property was more than $100,000 at any time in the year. The penalties for skipping it are steep.
T2017Summary of Reserves on Dispositions of Capital Property, for spreading a capital gain over up to five years when the buyer pays you over time.

Slips, Credits and Your Pay Cheque

FormWhat it's for
TD1Personal Tax Credits Returns. You fill these in for an employer or pension payer so they deduct the right amount of tax.
T1213Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source. If you know you'll get a big refund (regular RRSP contributions, support payments), this gets the money on your cheque instead of in April.
T2202Tuition and Enrolment Certificate. Your school issues it; you use it to claim tuition.
T2201Disability Tax Credit Certificate. A medical practitioner certifies it; CRA decides eligibility.
RC66Canada Child Benefit Application, if you didn't apply through your province's birth registration.
T1-OVPIndividual Tax Return for RRSP, PRPP and SPP Excess Contributions. The form nobody wants: it calculates the 1% a month tax on an RRSP over-contribution. The RRSP calculator helps you avoid it.

Fixing a Return or Fighting a Decision

FormWhat it's for

FormWhat it's for
RC1Request for a Business Number and Certain Program Accounts. Most people register online instead (Business Registration Online).
GST74Election and Revocation of an Election to Use the Quick Method of Accounting. Can save small service businesses real money; see our GST/HST $30,000 rule guide.
GST/HST returnMost businesses file the return online (GST/HST NETFILE or My Business Account). Paper filers use the personalized return CRA mails to them, so there is no blank one to download.
T2Corporation Income Tax Return. Almost every corporation resident in Canada must file one for every tax year, even when there is no tax to pay.
GST190GST/HST New Housing Rebate Application for Houses Purchased from a Builder.
GST191GST/HST New Housing Rebate Application for Owner-Built Houses.
GST524GST/HST New Residential Rental Property Rebate Application. In Ontario, add RC7524-ON for the provincial part.

Building or buying a new home in Ontario? The HST rebates are complicated enough that we gave them their own site: OntarioHSTRebates.ca.

SmartFile $99.00

The form is the easy part. The words are the hard part.

Form T400A is one page. What wins an objection is the statement of facts behind it. The CRA objection SmartFile reads your notice, drafts that statement with you, and fills in the form.

Three Rules for Any CRA Form

  1. Get it from canada.ca, this year. CRA revises forms, and an old version can be sent back. The year is usually in the corner, for example “(25)”.
  2. Online beats paper when you have the choice. My Account and certified software catch errors before CRA does, and the answer comes back faster. Paper takes weeks just to be opened.
  3. Keep a copy of everything you send, and the date. If it goes missing, the person with the copy wins the argument.

Not sure which form fits? Ask the tax assistant, or upload what CRA sent you to the tax document analyzer.

Form Questions

Where do I download official CRA forms?

From canada.ca, in CRA's “Forms listed by number” section. Every form on this page links straight to its CRA page.

Can I file my whole tax return on paper?

Yes, individuals can still request a paper T1 package, but most people file online through NETFILE-certified software, which is faster and catches errors before CRA does.

Which forms can CanadianTaxes.ai fill in?

Our SmartFiles fill in T400A (notice of objection), T2091(IND) (principal residence) and GST74 (quick method election), and prepare the numbers for T776 and Schedule 3 when you sell a rental property. You check and sign them; we never file anything for you.

Is a form enough to change my return?

For corrections, yes: T1-ADJ or Change my return in My Account. To dispute a CRA decision you need a notice of objection (T400A or online) within the deadline.
