The short version

  • Nova Scotia income tax for 2026 runs from 8.79% to 21% over $157,124, on top of federal tax. The combined top rate is 54%, reached at a lower income than anywhere else outside Quebec.
  • Nova Scotia started indexing its brackets to inflation in 2025 and dropped the income-based reduction of the basic personal amount, now $11,932 for everyone.
  • Example, salary only: $50,000 pays about $8,160 in total income tax, $100,000 about $25,360, and $200,000 about $69,900. Those are the highest of any province at all three incomes.
  • HST is 14% since April 2025, a point lower than the other Atlantic provinces.
  • Non-residents buying a home pay a 10% deed transfer tax on top of the municipal one, unless they become residents in time. Changes in August 2026 extended that window and added an exemption for inherited property.

Nova Scotia Taxes

Nova Scotia has the ocean, the seafood, and the highest provincial income tax in the country, roughly in that order of popularity. It has been chipping away at the last one: brackets now rise with inflation, the basic personal amount no longer shrinks as you earn more, and the HST dropped a point. It's still the most expensive province for income tax at every income level we checked. The calculator above runs your numbers.
