Refund Finder

We read your last three returns and list the credits and deductions you missed, with the value of each and how to claim it. Under $100 found, fee back.

CRA will happily take a correction to your return for up to ten years back. It just won't remind you. Refund Finder reads your last three returns and lists the money you left behind.

The short version

  • Upload up to three past returns and their notices of assessment. Tick a few boxes about your life in those years.
  • We look for credits and deductions you qualified for but didn't claim, tax withheld that never made it onto the return, and carry-forwards you never used.
  • Each find comes with its estimated value, the line, and how to claim it in My Account.
  • $49.00 + HST. If we find less than $100, you get your fee back.

Where the Money Usually Hides

Missed money is rarely one big thing. It's a pension amount nobody claimed the year a parent turned 65, medical receipts sitting in a kitchen drawer, a tuition amount that should have carried forward, a child care claim on the wrong spouse, union dues on a T4 that never got entered. Each is worth a few hundred dollars. Three years of them adds up.

The usual suspects:

  • Medical expenses, especially for a spouse or dependants, and the 12-month period that gets more of them over the threshold.
  • The age amount, pension income amount and pension splitting for anyone 65 or older.
  • Disability and caregiver amounts when someone in the family qualifies.
  • Tuition carried forward and never used, and student loan interest.
  • Donations, which can be pooled between spouses and carried forward five years.
  • The Canada workers benefit for lower-income workers.
  • The home buyers' amount, the home accessibility expense credit and the multigenerational home renovation credit.
  • Tax withheld on a slip that was entered without its box 22.

How It Works

  1. Tick what applied in any of the years: kids, a parent at home, tuition, a move, medical bills, a home purchase or renovation.
  2. Upload up to three years: the return for each year (from your software, your preparer, or CRA's printout in My Account) and the notice of assessment. Social insurance numbers in PDFs are blacked out on your computer before anything is sent.
  3. Read the report. Missed money by year, with the estimated value of each item and what to check before you claim it. Our calculator also checks slips against the returns.
  4. Claim it. In My Account, choose “Change my return” for each year, or mail form T1-ADJ. See how to change your return and how far back you can go. Keep the receipts.

Fix it at the source this year

Return Check reads this year's return before you file, so the money doesn't go missing in the first place.

Did My Accountant Miss Something?

Sometimes, yes, usually because nobody told them about the receipt in the drawer. If Refund Finder finds something on a return a preparer did, take the report to them first: most will file the correction at no charge, and they know the file. Refund Finder Questions

How far back can I claim a missed tax credit in Canada?

CRA accepts requests to change a return for any year in the previous 10 calendar years. Request the change in My Account (Change my return) or with form T1-ADJ, and keep the receipts.

How long does CRA take to process a change to my return?

It varies. CRA has reported delays in processing adjustment requests, and complex changes can take up to 35 weeks. Online requests are generally faster than paper.

What if Refund Finder does not find anything?

If the estimated total of missed money is under $100, ask for your fee back from the results page and we refund it.

Are the amounts exact?

No, they are estimates using the lowest federal rate for each year plus a typical provincial rate. CRA calculates the actual refund when it reassesses.
