How Much Income Tax Will I Pay in Canada?

It depends on four things: how much you earn, what kind of income it is, which province you lived in on December 31, and which deductions and credits you can claim. The calculator above handles the first three exactly and the most common deductions and credits. The rest is explained below, so you know what the estimate leaves out.

What the Calculator Does

  1. Adds up your income: employment, self-employment, other income, and half of any capital gains.
  2. Subtracts RRSP contributions and the deductible part of CPP.
  3. Applies the 2026 federal brackets (14% to 33%) and your province's brackets.
  4. Subtracts the basic personal amount, the Canada employment amount and credits for CPP and EI.
  5. Adds Ontario's surtax and health premium, or BC's tax reduction, where they apply.
  6. Compares the result with the tax already deducted from your pay, if you enter it.

The rates behind it are in our guide to Canadian income tax brackets, and why your next dollar costs more than your average is explained in marginal tax rate explained.

Income Tax at Common Incomes, 2026

Federal plus provincial income tax on ordinary income with basic credits only (no CPP, EI, or other deductions):

Alberta$9,171$21,347$38,410
British Columbia$9,015$20,295$38,433
Manitoba$11,222$24,522$45,285

New Brunswick$10,901$24,701$44,670

Calculated with our 2026 rules engine. Employees also pay CPP and EI, which reduce income tax slightly through credits and deductions, so their income tax is a little lower than the table at the same income.

What the Estimate Leaves Out

  • Dividends (coming soon), and credits for age, pension income, disability, medical, tuition, donations and children. See Canadian tax credits.
  • Deductions beyond RRSPs: child care, moving, support, carrying charges. See Canadian tax deductions.
  • Low-income provincial credits, such as Ontario's LIFT credit.
  • Benefits like the Canada Child Benefit, which aren't tax but change your cash.

Refund or Balance Owing?

Employers deduct tax from each pay using CRA's formulas, assuming that job is your only income. One job, no extras: usually close to right. Two jobs, a pension plus a job, self-employment income or investment income: you'll probably owe in April (why you owe taxes this year explains each case). Enter the tax already withheld (box 22 of your T4) in the calculator to see which way you're heading, and see the Canadian income tax guide for the common reasons.

Self-employed? Use the self-employed tax calculator instead: it includes both halves of CPP.

About $21,520 of federal and Ontario income tax on $100,000 of ordinary income in 2026, an average rate of about 21.5%. An employee also pays CPP and EI, and those credits bring the income tax down slightly.

Is this calculator accurate?

It uses the 2026 federal and provincial rules and is tested against hand-worked cases and an independent calculation. It is an estimate: it does not include every credit or deduction, so your real return can differ.

Does the calculator include CPP and EI?

Yes, for employment and self-employment income, using the 2026 rates and maximums.
