The short version

  • Alberta income tax for 2026 starts at 8% on the first $61,200 and tops out at 15% over $370,220, on top of federal tax. The combined top rate is 48%, among the lowest in Canada (Saskatchewan's is a hair lower at 47.5%).
  • Alberta's basic personal amount is $22,769, the highest in Canada, so the first $22,769 of income pays no Alberta tax at all.
  • Example, salary only: $50,000 pays about $5,880 in total income tax, $100,000 about $19,770, and $200,000 about $56,380.
  • No provincial sales tax, no health premium, no land transfer tax, and probate fees capped at $525. That's the "Alberta Advantage" in one sentence.
  • Families can get the Alberta Child and Family Benefit: up to $2,311 a year for one child for July 2026 to June 2027, paid four times a year with no separate application.

Alberta Taxes

Alberta has spent decades telling the rest of the country it pays less tax, and for once the marketing is mostly true. No sales tax, no surtax, no health premium, and a personal amount that makes most other provinces look stingy. The catch is in the word "mostly": at modest incomes, a few places beat Alberta, and the big savings show up at higher incomes and at the cash register. The calculator above runs your numbers; the rest of the page explains what Alberta charges and what it pays back.

Over $370,22015%48%

The 8% bracket is new: Alberta cut its lowest rate from 10% starting with 2025, and indexed the brackets by 2% for 2026. The combined rate steps up inside Alberta brackets wherever a federal bracket starts, and the "about" figures include the federal personal amount shrinking between $181,440 and $258,482. CPP and EI on wages are extra. How brackets work: tax brackets and marginal tax rate.

Is Alberta Really the Lowest-Tax Province?

$100,000$19,772$20,024$18,857Nunavut, $17,577

Income tax only, 2026, basic credits. At $50,000 and $100,000, B.C. actually charges a little less income tax than Alberta, because Alberta's lowest rate is still higher than B.C.'s. Alberta pulls ahead on income tax at higher incomes, and on everything else: on $40,000 of taxable spending a year, skipping a 7% PST saves about $2,800, and Ontario's 8% provincial HST costs about $3,200. Run any income through all of them with the province comparison calculator, or see the summary on provincial taxes.

Other Alberta Taxes

  • Sales tax: 5% GST only. No PST and no HST; see sales tax by province. Contractors selling into other provinces still charge the buyer's rate.
  • Buying a home: no land transfer tax, only land titles registration fees, which are a few hundred dollars on a typical home. First-home savings help: FHSA.
  • Probate: a flat fee by estate value, capped at $525; see probate vs income tax.
  • Corporations: 2% small business rate and 8% general rate in Alberta; see corporate tax rates.
  • Fuel and tobacco: Alberta does have these, so the province is not entirely tax-free. Just mostly.

Moving to Alberta: Tax Points

You pay the income tax of the province you live in on December 31, for the whole year. Move to Calgary on December 30 and the whole year is taxed at Alberta rates; move on January 2 and you get one more year of your old province. Moving costs can be deductible if the move brings you at least 40 km closer to a new job; see moving expenses. Selling your old home is usually tax-free under the principal residence exemption.

Alberta Tax Questions

8% on the first $61,200, 10% to $154,259, 12% to $185,111, 13% to $246,813, 14% to $370,220, and 15% above, on top of federal tax.

What is the top marginal tax rate in Alberta?

48% combined federal and Alberta, on taxable income over $370,220. Only Saskatchewan (47.5%) and two territories have a lower top rate.

What is the Alberta basic personal amount for 2026?

$22,769, the highest provincial basic personal amount in Canada.

Is Alberta the lowest tax province in Canada?

Not on income tax alone. At high incomes it is among the lowest, and it has no provincial sales tax. At modest incomes, B.C. and the territories charge slightly less income tax, and Saskatchewan has a slightly lower top rate. Counting sales tax, Alberta usually comes out ahead of every other province.

How much is the Alberta Child and Family Benefit?

For July 2026 to June 2027, up to $2,311 a year for one child ($1,529 base plus $782 working component), rising to $5,882 for four or more children. It is reduced as family net income rises and is paid in February, May, August and November.

Does Alberta have a land transfer tax?

No. Buyers pay land titles registration fees instead, which are much smaller than land transfer tax in Ontario or B.C.
