Charitable Donation Tax Credit
How the donation credit is calculated for 2026 and how to get more from the same gift.
The short version
- Federally for 2026: 14% on the first $200 of donations in a year, 29% on the rest (33% on the part matching income above $258,482). Your province adds its own credit.
- So bigger donations get a much better rate. Pooling both spouses' donations on one return, or saving several years' worth (you can carry them forward five years), gets more of them past the $200 line.
- You need official donation receipts from a registered charity or other qualified donee. A thank-you letter isn't a receipt.
- Donate publicly traded shares that went up in value directly to a charity, and the capital gain isn't taxed at all.
- The claim is generally limited to 75% of your net income (100% in the year of death and the year before).
Charitable Donation Tax Credit Canada
Generosity is its own reward, but the tax system adds a little extra, and the extra is lopsided: the first $200 gets a small credit and everything above it gets a big one. People who give $150 to five different causes in five different years get the worst of it. The same money, grouped, can be worth twice as much in tax credits. Here's how.
How the Credit Is Calculated
| Donations in the year | Federal credit (2026) | Effective federal rate |
|---|---|---|
| $200 | $28 | 14% |
| $1,000 | $28 + $232 = $260 | 26% |
| $5,000 | $28 + $1,392 = $1,420 | 28.4% |
Provinces add a two-tier credit too. In Ontario, a $1,000 donation brings back about $360 in total, federal plus provincial. Alberta's credit is the richest on donations above $200. See provincial taxes.
Four Ways to Get More From the Same Gift
- Pool spouses' donations. Either spouse can claim both spouses' receipts. Put them together so only one $200 threshold applies.
- Bunch years. Carry donations forward up to five years and claim them in one year to clear the $200 tier once instead of every year.
- Give shares, not cash. Donating publicly traded securities with a gain directly to a registered charity means the capital gain isn't taxed, and you still get a receipt for full value. Selling first and donating the cash wastes that. See capital gains tax in Canada.
- Claim in a high-income year if you're above $258,482, to get the 33% federal rate on that portion.
How should your family claim its donations?
Tell the assistant each spouse's donations, incomes and province. It works out who should claim, whether to carry forward, and the credit in dollars.
Who Counts as a Charity
The credit applies to gifts to qualified donees: registered Canadian charities, registered amateur athletic associations, registered journalism organizations, certain housing corporations, municipalities, the UN and its agencies, and a few foreign universities and charities. Check the charity's registration number on CRA's charities listing before giving. Gifts to individuals, GoFundMe campaigns for a person, or a political party don't qualify here; political donations have their own credit.
Receipts
An official receipt shows the charity's name and registration number, the date, the amount, and a statement that it's an official receipt for income tax purposes. If you got something back (a dinner, a gala ticket), the receipt shows only the eligible part. Keep receipts six years; see what tax receipts to keep. Workplace donations by payroll deduction show on your T4 box 46.
Watch Out for Donation Schemes
Any promotion promising a receipt worth more than you paid (art, timeshares, “leveraged” donations) is a tax shelter CRA has fought for decades, and taxpayers usually lose. If the receipt looks too good, it is.
Missed Receipts?
Donations you forgot can be added for up to five years later as a carry-forward, or the return changed with Change my return. Return Check flags donation claims that could be pooled or carried forward for a bigger credit. Every other credit is on Canadian tax credits.
Donation Credit Questions
How much is the charitable donation tax credit in Canada?
Federally for 2026, 14% of the first $200 of donations in the year and 29% of the rest, or 33% on the portion that matches taxable income above $258,482. Provinces add their own credit.
Can I claim my spouse's donations?
Yes. Either spouse or common-law partner can claim donations made by both, which is usually best on one return.
How long can I carry forward donations?
Up to five years after the year of the donation.
Is there a limit on how much I can claim?
Generally 75% of your net income for the year, and 100% in the year of death and the year before.
Is it better to donate shares or cash?
Donating publicly traded securities with an accrued gain directly to a registered charity is usually better, because the capital gain is not taxed and you still get a receipt for the full value.
