  • Vehicle wraps, signs on your building and similar items you keep for years may be capital, not a one-year expense.

Advertising and Marketing Tax Deductions

For most small businesses, advertising is the expense that pays for all the other expenses. The tax side is simple: spend it to get business, and it's deductible. The only real questions are whether something is a one-year expense or a long-lived asset, and a quirky old rule about foreign media.

The Foreign Media Rule

An old rule protects Canadian media: advertising in a foreign newspaper or periodical, or on a foreign broadcaster, that is aimed mainly at the Canadian market can be partly or fully non-deductible. It mostly matters to larger advertisers buying print or broadcast space. Digital ads bought through global platforms are treated under their own rules; most small businesses deduct them normally.

Keep It Provable

Keep invoices and platform statements (Google Ads and Meta both issue monthly or annual invoices). If you're registered for GST/HST, check whether the platform charged GST/HST, and claim the input tax credit. See receipts to keep.

Marketing That Pays for Itself

Since advertising is deductible, its after-tax cost is lower than the invoice. At a 30% marginal rate plus CPP, a $1,000 ad campaign costs a self-employed person roughly $600 to $650 after tax. That's not a reason to spend; it's a reason to track which ads actually bring in jobs. All other expense lines are on business expense deductions and T2125 explained.
